Atheletic Performance – A personal perspective

By now most of you have a sense of the fun I have with this work and the dimensions I take it into, professionally and personally, with both focused attentiveness and a spirit of play.

For the past 9 months, I have enjoyed working with several athletes who seek to optimize their performance with Polarity and “whatever it is that I do”. This has actually prompted me to go to a health club and work out myself. (“Like attracts like” and I like working with athletes, so I thought I better be one myself.) My goal is to have the energy and health that I had at 30 as I celebrate 50, whenever that may be.

Since November I have regularly enveloped myself in the consciousness of a gerbil and worked out on a cross-trainer machine with great zest and vigor. And though my fitness has improved, I have maintained a pretty consistent cycles per minute. I marvel at those hard-bodies on machines next to me who seemed to move their legs with such fluidity and ease as I chugged along, r-o-u-n-d and r-o-u-n-d.

Last week I studied “The Art of Structural Balancing” with Phil Young (received lots of structural work in the learning process) and a had session from Phil the last evening of the course in which he “unwound my hips from my legs.” Interesting concept, I thought as all my senses were put on notice to discover what the implications of this could be for my experience in this body and possibly for any clients with whom I found myself unwinding hips from legs.

So off to the gym this morning, into gerbil mode, and away I went… like the road runner in a cloud of dust! I am sure that my legs were just a circular blur. The machine told me I had gone from my usual 129 cyles per minute to 192 cycles per minute at the same resistance.

What an experience! I burned 25% more calories, went 30% further in the same time period and hopped off the machine feeling like a spring chicken, grinning right down to my toes. I am sure that if my yankee blue blooded up-tight puritanical soul could flow my being into fluidity, that I would find myself dancing like a jamacian mama to reggae music in the main street of my home town.

This is my ode to the health building, revitalizing potential of polarity!

Salut

“I felt all tension melt away. But more than that, I felt that we were addressing my soul, listening to it, hearing and responding to it at a subconscious level … I simply existed in greater harmony.”

J.C. Hanover, NH

The connection of mind, emotions and body in physical well-being have long been recognized by some forms of medical practice, and are rapidly being embraced by our own. It is becoming more and more common to appreciate that the causes for bodily complaints are not merely physical. Likewise, the remedies for these complaints cannot be merely material medicine, food and drink.

I have a life-long passion for facilitating health … deep, lasting health … both in myself and in others. This passion has led me to extensive training in energetic medicine. I have experienced and seen in my clients the transformational results that this approach produces. Nothing can equal the freed force of a human being whose body is in harmony with its energy.

As a result of my extensive studies in various forms of energetic medicine, I offer a combination of gentle, hands-on therapies* which may provide the following benefits to people of all ages and physical conditions:

    • relaxation and a deep sense of well-being
    • clarity of thinking and ability to focus attention
    • heightened creativity
    • invigorated vitality
    • relief from physical and emotional discomfort, personal and professional stress (e.g. challenges of parenting)
    • clarified sense of meaning and purpose
    • increased self-awareness and ability to manage one’s energy
    • strengthened immune system
    • accelerated recovery from injury or illness

* I have developed my conscious listening touch and presence from training in Polarity Therapy, Healing Touch, Reiki, Reflexology, Ayurvedic Aromatherapy, Craniosacral, Myofascial Release, Breathing techniques, Visceral and Myofascial Integration, and Chinese Internal Organ Massage. My application of all of these modalities fall within the scope of what is being called Energetic Medicine.

People like to think they can attain such benefits as those listed, but they wonder how. Here are some questions I am frequently asked about what I do.

How is what you do different from massage and other forms of body work?

While massage and other forms of body work involve hands-on therapy, the major differences with what I do is in the use of an expanded focus and in the transformation resulting from profound mind-body integration. The work I do has an emphasis on the patterns of energy flow in, around, and through your body. We explore a conscious understanding of the relationship between your physical experiences and your psyche.

For example, when working with shoulder tension, I look on a physical level to see if it is connected to other parts of your body, such as your hips. I may provide massage, myofascial release and/or craniosacral technique to address the symptoms on a physical level. Then I explore with you what thoughts, beliefs, and emotions may be contributing to holding energy in your shoulders. In this manner, energetic body work is an educational process of self-awareness that connects the physical with the greater wholeness in one’s being, first in the body and then in the related mind patterns. As a result, a conscious and lasting shift can occur. Thus, I am a facilitator or helper with my emphasis on awareness, listening, and sensing rather than on mechanical correction. Change comes from within you as you bring consciousness to your body’s energy.

What do you mean by energy systems?

Energy exists everywhere in nature – in elements such as thunder and

lightening, in plant life, animals, and in humans. That which animates and moves is what we call energy. It is easy to see the results of energy, but not the force itself. We watch things grow, move, explode, recede – but we may not see the actual force that is causing it. For that reason, discussions about energy in the human body can be confusing. What is elusive to our senses is hard to describe.

To help make this concept clearer, here is a simple example. On a tree I have at home, a branch has been partially cut; it droops; its foliage is reduced in color, deteriorating, even falling off. The flow of vital sap to this appendage has been vitally reduced. Much the same thing happens in humans. If blood is restricted in its flow, the tissues affected react; poor health or toxic conditions are the result.

Energy, however, while it is in sap and blood is much more than these physical substances. We cannot see it and that which restricts it’s flow is not only physical, but can be the result of mental, emotional or environmental influences as well. Actually, this concept is not new. Many ancient health care systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Indian Ayurveda have as their central concept an understanding of energy fields in the body and their connection to the whole person and his/her external world. In addition to forming a pattern, this life energy vitalizes all the various physiological and psychological functions within the body. Modern scientific research has provided new understanding of the evidence for the powerful effects and health benefits made possible by energy-based therapies.

The core therapies of my practice are based on the theory that there are patterns of energy in the human body which form a matrix or blueprint that the body uses when healing itself. With an understanding of this matrix, a trained practitioner can make connections to help re-establish the free flow of energy for optimum health.

How would I know if something was wrong with my energy system?

Trauma, overwhelming situations, fear, negative thoughts, anxiety, stress, poor diet can be held in the body, distorting and stopping the flow of life-force energy. If unresolved, these blockages stay in the connective tissue, create sickness and cause physical problems. My clients often come in complaining of muscle stiffness, back pain, digestive upsets or abdominal discomfort, shortness of breath, lack of physical stamina, mental dullness and lack of clarity, emotional imbalance, strained relationships, or unwanted addictive habits.

How does your therapy work?

I do not directly treat disease or illness. Rather I support the life

energy which flows through all the body organs, tissues, emotions and thought patterns. This life energy forms a link between the mind and body and aids in resolving emotional disturbances as well as physical imbalances.

The basic premise of the therapies I use is that conscious touch affects the human energy field. By knowing major flow patterns and key intersections (resonances) within the human energy field, I use appropriate hand placements which can relax you, allowing your life currents to be brought into balance. This relaxation creates a sense of deep calm out of which emerges clarity, new insight and empowerment. As this happens, the mental and emotional obstacles shift and physical strain and tension are eased.

I listen and respond to your body through gentle rocking, stretching, and conscious, pressure-sensitive touch. Your consciousness expands and you become more and more aware of what you are experiencing. You learn to cultivate the free flow of life supporting thought patterns which result in greater health, happiness and harmony. When the life-force energy flows freely within the body, chronic blocks of tension that reside in the muscles, bones and internal organs disappear. The end result is not just physical fitness, but rather the soul finding a free expression through the mind and body of the individual, restoring optimal health.

What is a session with you like?

In answer to this question, I share the words of one of my clients.

I signed up for Carolyn’s 10-session package last May. I have had chronic tension in my neck and shoulders as long as I can remember. I knew I needed more than massage. While it felt wonderful, the relaxation simply did not stay with me; I found myself tightening up again sometimes in a matter of hours. I had the notion that how I bore my body was related to my internal relationship to life. I just did not know how to get at and to change what was making me uncomfortable and tight.

My first appointment came. I was excited and did not know what to expect. It was a lovely early morning (Carolyn is accommodating!). I discovered a sign on the porch that instructed me to leave my shoes there. I entered a small waiting room and was welcomed by an invitation to enjoy a lovely warm foot bath, a cup of tea and any of the books and materials there. Soon Carolyn came to get me and we ascended to her “bird’s nest” room overlooking the Connecticut River. It is a spectacular, peaceful, lovely setting – private and very welcoming. Carolyn began by asking me what I was seeking. I explained my recurrent neck and shoulder tension. We spent a few minutes talking about what I was holding up there and then moved to her treatment table. She led me through a beautiful centering meditation which really touched me. Carolyn was so focused on me and my needs. I felt the meeting with her was sacred and blessed. She was supporting my highest spiritual needs in this effort to release my body’s tensions. Then she began the gentle placement of hands. I had never experienced anything like this. I could not help but relax. Mentally I slipped completely away from cognitive to a drifting serene place. I know my body responded to the support she gave it, the gentle stretching and rocking. I felt all tension melt away. But more than that, I felt that we were addressing my soul, listening to it, hearing and responding to it at a subconscious level. This went on for two hours! When it was over, I felt peaceful and
invigorated. Again, I did not work at any cognitive explanation or
resolution. I simply existed in greater harmony.

This pattern repeated itself for nine more sessions. My conscious intention was to loosen, allow, accept and flow in my body and in all aspects of my life. I did not have any one startling revelation; the sky did not part and voices did not thunder directions. But slowly and decidedly, I felt – and continued to feel – freer. This freedom is not only in my body but in my psyche as well. It permeates everything – how I am at work, at home, in my inner self and in my relationships. It is not a shrieking change, but a slow and gentle one. I have shifted and am letting go in very healthy ways. My neck and shoulder tension does come back from time to time. Carolyn showed me how to breathe into it to let it go. Sometimes that works. Sometimes that does not. But I am totally confident that the underlying tightness is working its way to the surface. It feels very very good to me.

I have to say one more thing. I have experienced Carolyn’s incredible integrity, generosity and skill. I am totally blown away by the sacredness and deep caring she brings to her work. I feel beautifully nurtured by her. I trust her completely. I am very grateful for her.

Symptoms of Inner Peace

Be on the lookout for symptoms of inner peace. The hearts of a great many have already been exposed to inner peace and it is possible that people everywhere could come down with it in epidemic proportions. This could pose a serious threat to what has, up to now, been a fairly stable condition of conflict in the world.

Some signs and symptoms of inner peace:

  • A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experiences.
  • An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.
  • A loss of interest in judging other people.
  • A loss of interest in judging self.
  • A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.
  • A loss of interest in conflict.
  • A loss of the ability to worry. (This is a very serious symptom)
  • Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation.
  • Contented feelings of connectedness with others and nature.
  • Frequent attacks of smiling.
  • An increasing tendency to let things happen rather than to make them happen.
  • An increased susceptibility to the love extended by others as well as the uncontrollable urge to extend it.

** WARNING ** WARNING ** WARNING **

If you have some or all of the above symptoms, please be advised that your condition of inner peace may be so far advanced as to not be curable. If you are exposed to anyone exhibiting any of these symptoms, remain exposed only at your own risk.

A Polarity Therapy Perspective from the Ground Floor Up

Carolyn “Lindy” Dewey, MS, RPP

This article will examine Polarity Therapy, an energetic health building resource. In particular, I will review how Polarity Therapy can bring healing to the concerns identified and enlightenment to the area of our bodies that rarely sees the light of day. This area is the perineum, the part of our torso that forms the “ground floor” of a strong healthy body.

Men’s Health Concerns

Concerns expressed by both men and women regarding men’s health include:

Spiritual Concerns

I do not feel connected with my life purpose, destiny.

My responsibilities do not allow time to address my spiritual needs and to explore how to build better health.

I do not feel capable of being loved fully.

Mental Concerns

I am concerned about growing older and losing my memory and vitality.

I need ways to balance work, exercise, and family.

I (or my Partner) have concerns regarding detrimental effects of my current or past use of alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes.

I am obsessed with my physical appearance, muscle mass, weight, hair loss.

I worry about staying fit and healthy.

I am unable or unwilling to address my own health concerns. I ignore my symptoms until they become nagging and pervasive.

Emotional Concerns

I have difficulty dealing with my own feelings and the emotions of others.

I battle with depression, anxiety, and stress.

I do not sleep well.

I am concerned with my habits of overeating, drinking, drugs, non-loving sex, and what may be at the root of them.

I have fears regarding health issues, and do not take time for regular check-ups. Consequently, by the time I go for help, my problems are acute.

Physical Concerns

I am unaware of my body.

I have deep concerns regarding diseases in my family such as cancer of the prostate gland or colon, skin cancer, heart problems, respiratory problems.

I frequently have low back pain and shoulder pain.

I am overweight, have a low energy level, and generally feel out of shape.

I am frequently constipated.

I am concerned about possible symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland..

I have sexual concerns related to my sexuality and reproductive functions.

This list is discouraging. The good news is that all of this is reversible. The remainder of this article will illuminate Polarity Therapy as an energetic health building resource. A specific Polarity approach for improving these concerns will be illustrated.

The Polarity Therapy Approach to Health Building

Dr. Randolph Stone, also known as the “Father of Energetic Medicine,” developed Polarity Therapy in the mid 1900s. Polarity Therapy has its roots in physical medicine from osteopathy and in ancient energy knowledge from eastern cultures. Polarity practitioners study bodywork, communication skills, polarity yoga, and nutrition. The American Polarity Therapy Association (APTA), formed in 1985, developed Standards of Practice and a Code of Ethics.

The Polarity model defines health as the free flow of energy through all aspects of one’s experience, including spiritual, mental, emotional, physical, relationships with others and our environment.

Learning to assume responsibility for one’s own health is a basic concept of Polarity. One must clearly discern the consequences of current habits to be able to make better decisions about one’s health. Therefore, the first thing that Polarity Therapy addresses is awareness of how one’s lifestyle affects health.

Fundamental to Polarity is the concept that the body has the intelligence to create its own optimal health. Intelligent touch from a trained practitioner, energy awareness education, and lifestyle modifications in exercise and nutrition, support life energy to flow through all the body organs, tissues, emotions and thought patterns. This life energy forms a link between the mind and body and aids in resolving emotional disturbances as well as physical imbalances.

When this energy is not flowing freely, “deep and concealed energy blocks cause chronic diseases through spasm of tissue and stasis (lack of movement).” (Dr. Stone) Bruce Burger, Polarity practitioner, educator, and author of Esoteric Anatomy, explains, “We understand energy blocks as excess, confused, and contradictory mental and emotional impulses to the musculature. This discord creates tension and … affects attunement with the Soul. An energy block defines a place where it hasn’t been safe to experience … to feel.” He continues, “When it is not safe for our feelings to flow outward into expression, … chronic fear and emotional tension lodge in the pelvis.”

Conscious touch and presence affect the human energy field, restoring a free flow of energy. “Blocked energy is cleared when it is safe to be present and feeling in our bodies. … Compassionate touch through polarity energy balancing facilitates a profound safety. … In this sacred space, clients are guided to experience that it is safe to be present in their bodies. … and safe to be present with their feelings. … Presence releases blocked energy.” (Burger)

Conscious presence and knowledge of major energy flow patterns enable a Polarity practitioner to use appropriate touch to facilitate relaxation. This relaxation also creates a sense of deep calm out of which emerges clarity, new insights, and empowerment. As the energy flows freely within the body, chronic blocks of tension that exist in the muscles, bones and internal organs begin to disappear. The result is the Soul finding a free expression through the mind and body of the individual, restoring optimal health.

How Polarity Therapy Addresses Men’s Health Concerns

In the Polarity energy anatomy model, the term “polarity” refers to the dual nature of energy flow. Outward directional movement illustrates how a thought held in the mind, when moved into the world of action, takes on substance and form in the physical world. This movement is ‘yang’ or masculine due to its expanding, building, active nature. The complementary (feminine/yin) evolutionary movement from the body to the mind, reconnects self to a higher Source. This movement is contracting, cleansing, and receptive. In a healthy person, energy movement is cyclical. “In nature, all life grows through these complementary processes.” (Burger)

As identified earlier, the most prevalent men’s health concerns relate to congestion of energy flow in the pelvic area. It is in the downward yang phase of energy movement where energy is most likely to stagnate causing problems of resistance, tension and constipation. When energy does not flow, we easily become exhausted, compromising our potential for self-realization.

The pelvic area is key to health. Our vital force resides in and flows from this region. Our “seat of emotions” holds a cellular imprint of childhood issues, survival instincts, power impulses, creative drive, and sexuality. The pelvic floor, which includes the muscles in and between the buttocks, literally holds these “deep seated” feelings and unconscious emotions. The pelvis is also the home for the organs of cleansing, renewal, regeneration, and healing. The downward flow of energy rules elimination. Tension and stagnation in the pelvic region contribute to physical problems affecting the prostate gland, sexual performance, and constipation.

A person out of balance in this area may feel uprooted, forced, restless, and lacking a sense of belonging. He may become anxious, depressed, numb, withdrawn, negative, defensive, and unable to look after himself and others or to adapt to change. The result is a diffuse fear of life, awkward and uncertain behaviors, sexual difficulties, and latent rejections of any helpful support. “Pelvic tension may indicate gender issues relating to giving and receiving emotional and sexual nourishment. … The pelvis rules the way we connect with others and nourish our selves. When we feel unsafe, we tense the pelvis.” (Burger)

Polarity Therapy has a unique potential to bring relief to symptoms. Releasing the energy current from below to flow upward, reconnects the cycle, releases chronic tension and unexpressed emotions, and restores health. “We release emotional fixations from the past, and restore the integrity of the nervous system” (Burger)

The potential benefits for men are profound. The effects are subtle, penetrating, lasting, and pleasant. Dr. Stone’s illuminates benefits of this approach. “Perineal technique works like a miracle. … It often marks a turning point in the client’s life, where the past is released and healthy elimination is established. … This work has marvelous results for low back pain, sciatica, sleeplessness, neck tension, respiratory symptoms, liver functions, stomach and digestive disturbances. … Stasis (congestion) is released by this relaxation, nervous tension balanced, and circulation improved because of the energy release.”

Summary of Possible Benefits

In general, Polarity Therapy deeply nurtures and supports inner processes to regulate and restore balance to mind and body.

In particular, Polarity can have profound benefits on men’s primary health concerns, in a manner that is relaxing and restorative.

  • Benefits of Polarity Therapy may include:
  • deep calm and sense of well-being
  • renewed sense of purpose, focus and joy in life
  • clear thinking and heightened creativity
  • ease in releasing bad habits
  • strengthened immune system

Polarity Theory is An Energetic Model of Health

The following quotes reflect the nature of Dr Stone’s thinking regarding the relationship between energy and the manifestation of our life force radiating vibrant health in all arenas of human experience:

“Energy is the real substance behind the appearance of matter and forms.”

“Health is not merely of the body. It is the natural expression of the body, mind, and soul when they are in rhythm with the One Life.”

“It is not merely a question of physical fitness, but rather is a result of the soul finding free expression through the mind and body of the individual.”

The basis of Polarity’s energy model is that energy precedes form and matter and that in order for change to occur, there must be movement. For movement, there must be a field in which this movement can occur, a place for movement to come from and a place for it to go toward. Here we have the characteristics of an electromagnetic field with a positive, generating pole, a negative, attracting pole, and a neutral pole for the energy to move through. This concept is applied to the human energy field by Polarity therapists and guides them to create movement and balance.

When considering life force energy, it has been noted that there is a natural phenomenon of self-organisation, called negative entropy, that is inherent in living systems. Bioelectromagnetic concepts imply that there is an underlying intelligence in all living systems that will create greater order, or health, given the optimal environment and conditions for this to occur. The Polarity therapist seeks to offer this environment and conditions for their clients.

History of Polarity Therapy & Scope of Practice

Polarity Therapy was developed by Dr . Randolph Stone, a traditional osteopath, a naturopath, and a chiropractor who was highly attuned to subtle movements of cerebrospinal fluid and the ways in which our physical bodies hold tension and stress in fascial tissue. He was widely recognised for his extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology and acknowledged for his continuous search for the mysterious elusive component that seemed to hold the key to health. His research took him around the world twelve times, studying the health care practices of various cultures.

In brief, Polarity is a marriage of Eastern concepts of Life and how it manifests; principles of energy theory from Atomic and Quantum Physics; a deep understanding of metabolic anatomy and physiology; and an diverse selection of techniques from the fields of osteopathy, naturopathy, chiropractic, massage, reflexology, acupressure, yoga, meditative practices, psychology, and more. For integrating these methods of health care into an Energy Model, Dr. Stone has been called the ‘Father of Energetic Medicine”.

The Polarity Model is a concept of health that allows a practitioner to utilise a wide spectrum of techniques to create resonance and harmonics that release tensions and strain patterns held by the body/mind, and thereby bring greater balance and ease to one’s life experience.

The method that Polarity practitioners use allows for different approaches to apply the energy model to build health. Thus, some practitioners may have more of a psychology counselling approach, some do purely bodywork (either with very energetic light touch craniosacral techniques or with deeper tissue release myofascial or acupressure techniques), some offer a nutrition counselling emphasis, some provide exercise and movement education. Though Polarity training encompasses all of these aspects, each practitioner will have a focus for how they choose to primarily work with their clients. In selecting a practitioner, one can ask questions to determine what kind of work a particular person does.

Polarity Theory into Practice

The characteristics of the various types of movement of energy – outward, inward, and stillness, are reflected in the qualities of touch used by Polarity therapists . Stimulating rocks, deep penetrating releases, and gentle holds are used to facilitate movement in the body’s cerebrospinal fluid, fascia, muscle tissues, joints, and organs. The characteristics of the type of communication expressed may vary along this spectrum, as well as recommendations for exercise and nutrition. Each therapist develops a form of working that resonates with how they can best facilitate health. Some practitioners may primarily use deep penetrating touch, others very gentle and light; many use a combination.

There is much more that could be said here about theory into practice, the many energy patterns, harmonic resonance in the body, and how a Polarity therapist works with this information. This will be addressed in more depth is future articles.

Training of Polarity Practitioners

The American Polarity Therapy Association, APTA, has established clear Standards of Practice and a Code of Ethics for Polarity Practitioners. APTA has also reviewed and accredited the Polarity curriculum of many schools around the country.

There are two levels of training for Polarity Therapists. An Associate level Polarity Practitioner, APP, has completed 160 hours of training in an APTA approved curriculum program and received APTA certification at this level. A Registered Polarity Practitioner, RPP, has completed a 650 hour APTA approved training program and been certified by ATPA. A CPT, Certified Polarity Therapist, may have completed either level of training and been certified by the school attended, but is not certified by APTA. The school may be accredited; the practitioner has just elected to not be accredited by APTA.

It is my understanding that several massage schools offer an afternoon class or a one-day or two-day workshop in Polarity. As a result, many massage therapists will say that they do Polarity. In clarification, there is a distinction between a massage therapist who may have a couple of Polarity protocols in their repertoire and one who has completed an accredited program. If in doubt, ask the practitioner what training they have received.

Polarity Training has several components:

  • Theory and Basic Principles of Polarity Therapy
  • Anatomy and Physiology (Both Orthodox metabolic model and Energy models are studied)
  • Energetic Evaluation and Integration
  • Polarity Body Work (spatially oriented bodywork and process oriented bodywork)
  • Communication and Facilitation
  • Energetic Nutrition
  • Stretching Postures
  • Personal Polarity Experience
  • Clinical Supervision
  • Professional Ethics & Law, Business Management and Promotion
  • Electives (e.g. advanced classes in craniosacral work, subtle energy work, myofascial integration, energetic evaluation, Reflexology, Ayurvedic Aromatherapy)

Future articles may go into one or more of these areas in further depth. Please let me know if there is a particular area that you feel would be of interest to expound upon.

How You Benefit from Polarity

The bottom line in applying concepts of energy to our health is – Can all this energy stuff do anything for me? How can my life, my creativity, my relationships, my challenges be improved with these concepts and techniques?

Most of us are challenged by work, family, and physical tensions beyond what seems reasonable in order to maintain good health. We live in a culture with no siesta. Nap time expires upon graduation from kindergarten. Accomplishing the work needing to be done in a day requires long hours and often little time to rest. What rest time we have, may be not be peaceful and refreshing. Our meals are hurried and often many of us cannot find the time to give our bodies a refreshing walk or to participate in a regular exercise program.

The first thing that Polarity addresses is the effect of our lifestyle on our physiology. We may be in a constant state of “fight or flight”, a tense, aware, alarm state, prepared to respond to the next urgent demand. The physiological equivalent of this is described as activation of the Sympathetic Nervous System, SNS. Our SNS regulates our ability to respond to external demands. For many of us, our SNS is overloaded with stimuli. The Parasympathetic Nervous System, PNS, is the aspect of our physiology that rebuilds and repairs our body and mind when we are resting. Consequently, our lifestyle maybe imbalanced because the PNS does not have sufficient time and space to do its job.

The initial body contacts in any Polarity session seek to restore this balance by inviting the body/mind to enter a deep state of relaxation, allowing the PNS to survey the condition of the body/mind and to do the repair and nourishing that is required to optimise integrated performance. For this reason, people not only find a physical release of tension from Polarity work, but often have clear insights into how to better solve daily challenges or to make better choices regarding creating a harmonious and satisfying lifestyle.

There is a perception in health care, that we take our bodies to health professionals to fix us, much the way we take our automobiles to a mechanic for repair.

In energy medicine, the approach is different. The basic concept is that the body has the intelligence to create optimal health. This ability of the body/mind is only limited by the conditions of its internal and external environment and the nutrients or toxins that may be present. So a Polarity practitioner supports one to create optimal conditions for health, first by bringing one to a restful state in which this inner sight can survey the scene, then in helping one to bring to conscious awareness what the wisdom within knows. In this way, Polarity practitioners function as health educators rather than “healers”. By supporting clients to discover their own best choices and creating the opportunity to experience their own body restoring balance and a fuller expression of health, the client feels empowered and connected to core truths and the health building and healing potential within their being. Discovery and connection to this inner guidance system has a profound and integrated effect on all aspects of life force expression and may be reflected in physical vitality, emotional balance, mental clarity and creativity, spiritual connectedness and the peaceful ease of harmonious relationships with others. If this sounds like getting to fill up one’s cup from the deep clear well of life force energy on a sunny day with a gentle wind and clear brilliant skies overhead, it is because this may be so.

I have addressed the conceptual framework within which I, a Polarity practitioner, seek to support others to create health. In articles that follow, I target specific issues(physical, emotional, stress related, etc.), that may lead one to seek support with Polarity.

Athletic Performance: A Personal Perspective

By now most of you have a sense of the fun I have with this work and the dimensions I take it into, professionally and personally, with both focused attentiveness and a spirit of play. The following was written in May after a training on “The Art of Structural Balancing”:

For the past 9 months, I have enjoyed working with several athletes who seek to optimize their performance with Polarity and “whatever it is that I do”. This has actually prompted me to go to a health club and work out myself. (“Like attracts like” and I like working with athletes, so I thought I better become one myself.) My goal is to have the energy and health that I had at 30 as I celebrate 50, whenever that may be.

Since November I have regularly enveloped myself in the consciousness of a gerbil and worked out on a cross-trainer machine with great zest and vigor. And though my fitness has improved, I have maintained a pretty consistent cycles per minute. I marveled at those hard-bodies on machines next to me who seemed to move their legs with such fluidity and ease as I chugged along, r-o-u-n-d and r-o-u-n-d.

Last week, I studied “The Art of Structural Balancing” with Phil Young, an internationally recognized teacher of Polarity Therapy from Devon, England. The training included receiving lots of structural work in the learning process and a session from Phil the last evening of the course in which he “unwound my hips from my legs.” Interesting concept, I thought, as all my senses were put on notice to discover what the implications of this could be for my experience in this body and possibly for any clients with whom I found myself unwinding hips from legs.

So off to the gym this morning, into gerbil mode, and away I went… like the road runner in a cloud of dust! I am sure that my legs were just a circular blur. The machine told me I had gone from my usual 129 cycles per minute to 192 cycles per minute at the same resistance.

What an experience! I burned 25% more calories, went 30% further in the same time period and hopped off the machine feeling like a spring chicken, grinning right down to my toes. I am sure that if my Yankee blue blooded up-tight puritanical soul could follow my spirit into fluidity, that I would find myself dancing like a Jamaican Mama to reggae music in the main street of my home town.

This is my ode to the health building, revitalizing potential of Polarity!

YOUR QUESTIONS …

Q: “…What to expect, type and length of treatment, and possible secondary benefits when addressing a particular problem from a Polarity perspective?”

Predicting the type and length of treatment on the basis of a particular problem or symptom is something I do not do. Building health has so many factors that are highly individual. Polarity assessment of specific symptoms and dis-ease processes take into account the constitutional status of each person. The actual process of using Polarity as a resource for building health is based upon learning to listen to one’s body and to honour the wisdom within. There are clear somatic (body) cues that can guide one to determine what is the best frequency and the optimal duration of treatment. Learning to notice and recognise shifts in one’s symptoms and experiences is at the heart of developing this awareness and is the keystone of Polarity work. These conscious shifts become the guide for pacing the type, frequency and duration of sessions.

There is another factor to consider also, and that is the balance with one’s ability to easily afford the cost of sessions. There is little point is straining one’s budget to create relief from some strain pattern in one’s body (mental, emotional or physical), if doing so is going to create an additional financial stress in one’s life that will exacerbate the very problem one is trying to solve or will create new ones.

In response to possible secondary benefits, many find that once the primary symptoms have been resolved, that they want to continue with Polarity because of the secondary benefits they have experienced. These benefits may include an increased sense of well-being and calmness, clarity of thinking, better sleep, more energy and vitality, enhanced creativity, increased sense of humour, and a changed perspective on what is important in life and in relationships

It feels important to note, that sometimes progress with the primary symptom that brings people to explore Polarity may be very slow or in some cases imperceptible. However these secondary benefits are so significant that people may choose to continue to come for sessions for these secondary benefits alone.

Q: What are the mental, emotional, and physical benefits of Polarity work with Alcoholics and persons with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

I am going to respond to these separately.

In the case of Alcoholism and co-dependency, I have worked with many addicts and alcoholics in recovery who, though clean and sober, are stuck mentally and emotionally and continue with unhealthy habits for their physiology, relationships with others, and sense of emotional well-being. Some of the first things reported by clients include a renewed interest in caring for their bodies, better sleep, and an increased enthusiasm for life. Ongoing work blossoms this zest for living through increased involvement in meaningful pursuits, and a healthier lifestyle. It seems that those emerging from the terrors of being on the edge of the dark abyss of addiction, develop a passion for life that is full of vitality and creativity. Healthy habits may become obsessive and awareness of this, brings additional balance to choice making in this aspect of life. Increased awareness also expands into all other arenas of life, affecting perception of the dynamics of interpersonal experiences, the value of healthy boundaries, and strategies to maintain them.

For those in the throws of active addiction, an experience of themselves that is boundaried, pleasurable, and sourced to their soul, may elicit a shift toward choosing to use Polarity until integrity is restored to the core level of their being. As this core strength builds, the positive experiences are sufficient reinforcement to support additional choices that are life supporting. Once this happens, often the addiction just fades away in favour of choosing these new health building habits.

Such is also the case, with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) where loss of self-awareness and collapse of boundaries can occur. Of interest, research has shown that there is a link between PTSD and alcoholism, both from the perspective of alcoholism being a contributing factor in PTSD and a coping strategy for its manifestation. (Cermak, 1988; Schnurr, 1996). Polarity may lead to a shift in perception that allows folks with PTSD to develop an understanding of the assorted physiological symptoms of hyperarousal, constriction, dissociation, and freezing (helplessness). Awareness and understanding occurs over time, at a pace that can be comfortably managed, thereby facilitating a restoration of boundaries and the development of learning tools to deal with the symptoms. This process permits development of mastery of these symptoms through the recognition of their physiological cues, accurate knowledge of the known environment, and an appropriate assessment of danger.

Q: Please address specific applications of Polarity Protocols and Myofascial Integration for migraines, low back pain, and fibromyalgia.

Other stress related conditions such as migraines, fibromyalgia, post-traumatic fibromyalgia, and low back pain, can have their origins in experiences where stress overloads the ability of the individual to handle it. Both migraines and low back pain, seem to have identifiable strain patterns in the fascia network and/or the craniosacral system. When listening to the body on either of these levels, some inner mechanism seems to come into play, releasing or shifting the held stress pattern. I cannot say with any certainty what the actual mechanism of this release may be as research in this area is relatively new. There are many hypotheses, but the significant point is that the results are rather consistent and positive. The key here for me, seems to stem from conscious listening to inner levels of activity, acknowledging the inner healer, and allowing sufficient time for the self-correcting mechanisms of the body to engage and release the stress.

Given that research indicates that both migraines, fibromyalgia and post-traumatic fibromyalgia, are stress related, the mechanism described above clearly offers a potential resolution of these held stresses.

Myofascial

Myofascial Release and Integration

Working with fascia addresses the continuity of the soft tissue that provides support and protection for most structures within the human body and wraps every muscle fiber, muscle tissue, blood vessel, nerve, organ (including the heart, lungs, brain, spinal cord as well as the abdominal organs), body cavity, and bone.

Fascia becomes restricted with physical or emotional trauma, injuries, accidents, surgery, habitual poor posture, toxicity, overuse and infection, resulting in muscle tension, rigidity, headaches, structural misalignment, compressed nerves, inflammation, tissue thickening, diminished blood flow, all of which cause pain, and more muscle tension and inflammation. Myofascial work breaks this feedback loop at different places in the cycle.

Myofascial work is an integral component of Polarity, Craniosacral Therapy, Visceral Work, Stretching, and Osteopathy. Myofascial techniques involve a variety of approaches to address the restrictions, eliminate pain and restore motion. These include applying gentle sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue to elicit a gentle tissue stretching, positional release, deep trigger point pressure, soft tissue mobilization, scar tissue releases, strain counter strain techniques, active assisted stretching, and foam rolling.

Fascial release resets muscle fiber length, restores organ function, improves circulation, flexibility, proper posture, balance and stability, fluid movement and ability to handle stress, while reducing tension, restrictions, and pain. It is an important precursor to strengthening as flexibility and range of motion need to be restored first or your body is forced into compensatory movement patterns around the existing restrictions.

This work also addresses issues of TMJ, carpal tunnel, fibromyalgia, and migraine headaches.

It can be an effective compliment to other therapies, surgery, and athletic training and competition.

Carol Manheim summarized the principles of Myofascial Release:

  • Fascia covers all organs of the body, muscle and fascia cannot be separated.
  • All muscle stretching is myofascial stretching.
  • Myofascial stretching in one area of the body can be felt in and will affect the other body areas.
  • Release of myofascial restrictions can affect other body organs through a release of tension in the whole fascia system.
  • Myofascial release techniques work even though the exact mechanism is not yet fully understood.
